Kim Onyskiw is a self taught artist from Skelmanthorpe, a village on the outskirts of Huddersfield, UK, working predominantly in acrylics to create bright and colourful art.
Growing up surrounded by the Yorkshire countryside and with a house constantly full of animals has had a large impact on Kim's paintings. The natural world is often the focus in her work, whether it's scenic landscapes with vivid skies or the whimsical side of animals in her cartoon style pieces.
Kim (or Кім Ониськів in Ukrainian) is also influenced by her Ukrainian heritage. Her paternal grandparents were born in Western Ukraine, and she regularly visits to seek inspiration. Elements such as pysanky (decorated eggs) and the patterns traditionally used on them inspire some of her paintings, along with the natural scenery.
Her original acrylic art is regularly exhibited at Holmfirth Artweek as an invited artist, she is also part of the Artweek committee behind organising the event. Kim painted a Snowdog sculpture as part of Snowdogs Kirklees, and her dog Spotter can now be seen outside Donaldson's Vets in Almondbury, and may occasionally appear in the background on the TV series The Yorkshire Vet. Kim has previously exhibited her work at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, The Shevchenko Library and Archive in London, Huddersfield Art Station, Holmfirth Tech, Skelmanthorpe Village Art, Almond Garden Gallery in Almondbury, Art at the House in Shepley, Bates Mill in Huddersfield and Kirkheaton Art Festival.
Her work has featured as the artwork for the Mark Morriss album “A Flash of Darkness”, comprising of 3 seasonal versions of cute and gory animal scenes for different formats, plus an EP cover.
